I envision this as a planet of about Earth size, but with a barren and boring landscape, such as that on Mars. However, it has a thick, multi-layered, dense atmosphere. Its moon is only gas, with no solid core. The physics allowing this are being debated.
Somewhat small, a 4:3 ratio, rendered in POV-ray, touched up in iPhoto.
Ah, but could it? I think some of the gas from the original planet could have been drawn away by a passing meteor or something, fallen in on itself, and never returned to the host planet. The gas is slowly compressing to form a core (on a geologic timescale).
After all, when planets were first being formed, did they start with a solid core?
And does Jupiter have a core? No one knows.
yes jupiter has a solid core, and it is the solid core that gathers the gases around itself. there was a lot of gases on the outer sides of our solar system so the planets like jupiter and saturn had the opportunity to collect around themselves lots of it. but sci fi as you say

Besides, it's Science Fiction.
